The House of Cards is About to Fall

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last few hours, no doubt you’ve heard all about the latest news from Trumpville. In case you haven’t, I’ll give a quick summary.

Michael Flynn, former national security adviser for Donald Trump, plead guilty to making false statements as part of a plea deal with Robert Mueller, special counsel on an investigation into Russia’s interference with the 2016 election. As outlined by Seth Abramson, a former attorney and current professor of Legacy Advocacy at the University of New Hampshire, this plea deal has massive implications as Mueller likely wouldn’t have reached such an agreement with Flynn if he wasn’t sure he could incriminate someone “higher up the food-chain.” In Flynn’s case, the only people higher on that chain are Donald Trump and Mike Pence. Yikes.

For obvious reasons, this situation is giving everyone Watergate vibes. When you really get down to the heart of the issue at hand, however, the implications are much more far-reaching than that of Watergate.

With Watergate, it was simply, to put it incredibly lightly, Nixon denying that he had any of his people break into the Democratic National Convention. I realize I distilled the shit out of what Watergate was, but the point is that it was a domestic issue. Nixon’s actions were illegal and wrong, but at least it pertained to American politics alone. With Trump, it gets a bit more dicey.

Yeah, it’s that bad.

The President of the United States may have aided in an attempt to destroy the democracy of the very nation he leads. The domestic and international implications of this have the potential to drastically change the political landscape of not just the United States, but the world.

What will happen to the GOP once this is all said and done? They have backed Trump at every turn and now he’s involved in what will likely end up as the most shocking scandal in American history.

What will the rest of the world think of America? No doubt people are already shaking their heads at how Trump has been handling himself thus far, but this would take it to a whole new level. Our reputation could be substantially damaged.

Above all else, there’s a sort of irony in this whole ordeal. Trump has spent just about every waking minute of his time in office trying to unravel Obama’s legacy (which is something I want to explore more at a later date). Rather than come up with his own policies like Obama did, Trump has been acting as though being President is like competing in a debate and is simply issuing a rebuttal to everything Obama did. All the while managing to tweet up a storm on a daily basis.

The funniest part of all this for me is that while he was trying to unravel Obama’s legacy, he didn’t pay attention to his own legacy as it was unraveling before our very eyes. He has played his presidency extremely fast and loose thus far and it’s now all about to crumble before his eyes.

Donald Trump has essentially been holding on to a stick of dynamite with what he thought was a long fuse. Turns out, it was far shorter than he realized. The fuse is almost up and the dynamite is about to blow.

The only question left is what will be left standing in the aftermath of the blast.
