I’m Addicted to Black Mirror
I know, I know. I’m wayyyy behind the ball on this one. The show premiered in 2011 over in the UK and it came to Netflix in 2016. Better late than never, though, right?
This weekend, I finally got around to starting Black Mirror and my mind was blown. The social commentary in this show is so incredibly on point that it’s scary. While the technology on display is far more advanced than our own, none of it feels outlandish. Just about every episode feels like it could happen within the next 15–20 years. It’s completely captivated me and left me with many thoughts from the very first episode.
To be fair, we didn’t start with the first episode of the series since I had read it doesn’t have to be watched in order and that the very first isn’t a good starting point. Instead, we started with “San Junipero” from the third season. I’m glad we started there since it was a good intro into what the series is all about, as opposed to the shocking/depressing nature of the first episode of Season 1. But even with that episode leaving me feeling weird, I was ready to dive into the rest of the series headfirst.
Here we are a day later, we’ve finished up Season 2 and damn I’m shook. So here’s what I’m going to do.
Over the next few days, I’ll be going through the series and putting down some thoughts and impressions on each episode. I realize that these episodes have been talked to death at this point, but instead of pouring over all the articles that are out there (which I definitely will at some point), I figured I would give my own unfiltered thoughts before I let my mind be influenced by what others have to say. So be gentle if I say something that’s already been said.
At this point, I have eight episodes to go through. Unfortunately, Kayla is going out of town until Wednesday and then I’ll be out of town from Thursday until Monday. That means we’ll likely only be able to (maybe) finish half of Season 3 between now and next Monday. But that’s fine! The eight episode bank that I’ve got will last me through the week easily.
I may post more than one a day since I’m so jazzed about this series and I’ll go in the order that I watched the episodes. That means I’ll be starting tomorrow with “San Junipero.”
If you like Black Mirror, I hope you’ll stop by and read my thoughts!
